Football icon Diego Maradona has been buried without his sick heart to prevent fans from stealing him, according to a senior doctor who also works as a journalist.

Nelson Castro, 66, a doctor and writer from Argentina, hosts a political talk show on TV channel Todo Noticias called “El Juego Limpio” – which translates to “Fair Game”.

While appearing on another show, “La Mesa de Juana Viale,” Castro was talking about his new book, “Diego’s Health,” which focuses on former soccer player Maradona.

Castro claimed during his appearance on the show The football legend was buried without a heart after learning that there was a plan to rob him.

Instead, he said, the body was buried during a private funeral next to his parents at Jardin de Bella Vista Cemetery in Bella Vista, Buenos Aires, where it was placed in the grave without his heart.

Castro said accessing all of the medical records was a “team effort” and was “quite intense” and that Maradona was so heartbroken that it was surprising he lived so long.

While Maradona has a strong body that can handle a lot, as an expert in cardiology, Castro said “other people would have died,” local media InfoBay reported.

“The problem was that he didn’t want to recover properly,” he added.

Speaking about the decision to remove the heart before burying the body, he claimed that a group of football troublemakers from the Gimnasia Football Club were planning to “break in and extract the heart”.

He added that this did not happen because it was expected that there would be a plot to steal his heart, so his heart was removed before such a plot could be carried out.

He said it was also removed for his consideration in connection with obtaining more information about the cause of Maradona’s death.

Castro added that Maradona’s heart weighs half a kilogram when the heart usually weighs 300 grams. He had a big heart due to other things like heart failure and because of the heart disease he had.

Diego Maradona died in his sleep on November 25, 2020, after suffering a heart attack.

After his death, his coffin was placed in the Presidential Palace of Argentina, with his three T-shirts and the Argentine flag draped over it.
