The British designer reveals how she turned Lady Gaga into Patricia Reggiani for the new Gucci movie

Dripping in glamour and betrayal and based on a true-to-life story, The House of Gucci made a buzz for both film and fashion lovers.

From maidens’ wedding gown to sizzling ski outfits, the film has its leading lady—Lady Gaga as a jealous Patrizia Reggiani, who hired a hitman to kill her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci—heralds a true fashion show across the big screen.

Ahead of today’s release, Academy Award-winning British fashion designer Janty Yates has revealed exclusively the secrets that turned Lady Gaga into the “Black Widow”…

1: short cut for style

First impressions matter, and the dress that Patrizia wore when she met Maurizio Gucci at a party is a beautiful dress, based on a pink dress worn by real-life Patricia.

It was created using Duchess satin and took six weeks to fit in the hand of Gante’s costume cutter, Dominic Young.

The dress was originally much longer – it went up by 18 at the request of Ridley Scott.

‘We kept five camera crews waiting for that day, thankfully LG . says Ganty [as she calls Lady Gaga] With her was her man from New York, who was the coolest hand sewer and had the strongest hands of us all.

“So we put it on an apple crate and took very sharp scissors! ”.

Patricia Reggiani was the queen of bling, and she’d never choose a single piece of jewelry if she was going to do it.

For most parts of the movie, Janty used 20 trays of jewelry, but on big occasions, high-end Bulgari or Boucheron jewelers security guards would arrive with the real deal: for the occasion, Bulgari’s diamonds and rubies.

2: Logos to GOGO

Janti and her team gained access to the entire treasure of the Gucci archive for the film.

It was Gaga’s idea to wear a head-to-toe logo embellished Gucci at a meeting in which Patricia discovers her maid has a fake Gucci handbag, which leads to a scene where she walks down 42nd Street in New York and scolds the seller.

“LG felt, and agreed, that it should be complete with Gucci,” Gante says.

3: ALTAR IMAGE

During eight to ten weeks of preparation, the wedding dress with cathedral veil was Gante’s favorite design, a ‘labor of love’, in which the lace was painstakingly sewn by hand.

With a sweetheart neckline, high-low hem and lace-up sleeves, it’s not a floor-length version of Patrizia’s gown with a high neck—although Janty made an exact copy.

“We haven’t decided yet,” Ganty says. Her hair and makeup team, her manager, me, her stylists—we all went: ‘It definitely has to be this guy. “

4: dress to kill

In this scene, Patrizia wears murder clothes (albeit not literally) in a vintage Yves Saint Laurent, rented from one of the three Italian fashion houses that have been published, along with her old mink coat.

The red light shoes were designed by Janty and manufactured by theatrical shoemaker Pompey in Rome.

Janty says, “I had four or five different designs, which we sent to LA, and she wore one pair and said, ‘Oh my gosh, I love these shoes—make them made in every color! “

Gaga’s Patricia wears 54 different costumes in the movie, but she never repeats a single item.

You will come to a suitable place; We made about a dozen combinations, apart from Zoom combinations when we couldn’t move [due to Covid restrictions].

She’d come, we’d discuss the scene, we’d have all our antiques in there, she’d say ‘I’m imagining it’ and then we’d do every piece of jewelry, and shoes, and bags for that very spectacle – and then she wouldn’t wear it again.

5: lady in lace

Gaga’s Patricia could have been the Joan Collins Dynasty issue, but director Sir Ridley Scott wanted a slightly more discreet look, in the style of 1950s Italian siren Gina Lollobrigida.

The strapless silk lace dress and jacket the star wore to the Gucci family gathering on the banks of Lake Como is a homage to the outfit worn by Lollobrigida and created by Dominic Young.

“LG said she really wanted to dress like her Italian mother did at the time, so we took that as a starting point,” Gante says.

6: Ice Maid

When Lady Gaga tweeted this alpine photo, with the caption “Signore e Signora Gucci,” back in March, the internet caught fire.

Dressed in black on the slopes, except for leather jewels of gold and a hat of white chinchilla fur, she seemed the perfect wicked wife.

Co-stars Adam Driver, such as Maurizio Gucci, and Camille Cotten, the French actress who played his lover at the time of his death, were originally supposed to wear fur hats as well, before Lady Gaga announced they were off limits.

‘My lady said, ‘She doesn’t wear a fur hat – I’ll wear all the fur hats,’ says Gante.

As for her character, Gaga has worn the lion’s share of jewelry, too.

‘she [Patrizia] “She almost always wore huge earrings, or a brooch, or two or four bracelets or bangles, and she wore two knots,” Janti says.

“All the costume jewelry we got from a hired jeweler, Pikkio, in Rome – I cleaned it!”

7: The Dancing Queen

The vibrant turquoise dress Patrizia Gaga wears for a nightclub scene in the trailer was carefully designed by the Janty team, to accommodate the six-month-old baby bump of the character, who was pregnant with one of her two daughters at the time.

8: Black Widow

No wonder this image of Lady Gaga was used in the promotional photos for the movie. Her Patrizia funeral apparel makes a sense of black elegance from head to toe, except for a bold white jewelry necklace with a matching bracelet, and a bright red packet.

‘Dominic Young created three black dresses,’ says Ganty.

LG wears them all in the movie, but this line has such an interesting neckline.

“He made it of silk and she was very happy to wear it and it worked in that scene.”
