Swedish startup unveils tiny rice-sized chip implant that stores your COVID vaccine passport


Epicenter, a Stockholm-based startup, has revealed a new way to carry a passport for a COVID vaccine – in a microchip implanted under your skin.

The implant can be read by any device using Near Field Communication (NFC) – the technology used for contactless payments and keyless entry systems.

In a video shared by Epicenter, Hannes Sjöblad, chief distribution officer, holds the chip in his arm and waves a smartphone above it to show his vaccination status.

He said in a statement: “Implants are a versatile technology that can be used for many different things, and at the moment it is very convenient to have a COVID passport always available on your implant.

Since then, the virus has taken over the world – shutting down businesses and forcing people into their homes for months.

Although lockdowns have since eased around the world, the coronavirus is still rampant and mutating into new variants that are difficult to prevent from spreading.

However, now the world has access to vaccines, relieving symptoms of the deadly virus, and information on the status of the vaccine is provided in paper or digital form known as a COVID passport.

Many venues, restaurants, bars, concert halls, and museums across the United States require visitors to present their vaccination status to enter the building.

Epicenter wants to make providing this information as easy as possible.

In case your phone battery runs out, you can always have access to it. So of course, that’s how we use this technology today, and we’ll use it next year for something else.

The chip is located just under the skin, either in the arm or between the thumb and forefinger.

According to Sjöblad, the procedure is “completely reversible” and does not require a special phone app.
