A four-year-old girl has been left with horrific facial scars after being attacked by a pit bull when she and her mother tried to help its dementia-stricken owner.

Lainey was savaged by the vicious beast when she, her brother Wesley, two, and mom Bethany Hastings tried to help their neighbor get back to her house.

The elderly woman had wandered on to their property on April 26 and they escorted her back using their golf cart in Bonneau, South Carolina.

Bethany said when they arrived at the woman’s home, her front door was open and the pit bull came out and began viscously attacking her children.

The dog first lunged at the toddler, injuring his face before moving on to Lainey after she screamed.

The mother sprung into action and tried to fight it off but the animal got loose and attacked the girl again, dragging her and causing multiple injuries to her face.

‘They hadn’t quite seen anything like that before to that extent, with that much damage,’ Lainey’s mother said about the injuries to the four-year-old’s face

‘First he got my brother, and then second he got me and then third he got my mom,’ four-year-old Lainey, whose scars had just begun to heal, told WCSC weeks after her attack.

Hastings, a nurse, was eventually able to get a grip on the wild dog for 15 terrifying minutes as she waited for help.

As she held on, she said the dog bit at her face and she was simultaneously getting bitten by fire ants crawling all over her body, she told WCSC.

‘I didn’t have a choice,’ she said. ‘If I had let go, he would have gotten them or me again.’

A neighbor miraculously arrived five minutes before paramedics and helped her children into his truck as she held the dog down.

The mother and two children were all taken to a local hospital to be treated but while Hastings and her son were let go that same day, Lainey, who had the most extensive injuries, had to remain in intensive care for four days.

‘They hadn’t quite seen anything like that before to that extent, with that much damage,’ Lainey’s mother said about the injuries. ‘I thought she’d wind up at the hospital maybe for a broken bone or something like that, but never this.’

While the dog responsible has been euthanized Hastings said she is still shaken by the terrifying experience but is trying to regain a sense of normalcy.

‘After that, you realize just how vulnerable you are to everything,’ the brave mother said.
