Just hours earlier, Richard had only had four stars on his first solo try, and had to use his mouth to try to untie some knots to get back the stars that were hanging by a rope.

When the fish’s guts and offal fell on him, the lieutenant colonel struggled to untie the string the stars were on and in anger said, ‘Holy Moly’, before the klaxon sounded again, heralding the end of the mission.

Speaking about the knot, he said: Who made this contract? It is wet and tight. That’s not tight, which elicited laughter from Ant and Dec.

“What a disappointment,” said Richard, “we’re going to have something to eat tonight. I was really hoping to do better than that.”

A frustrated Richard returned to camp and told them how difficult it was to find the trial, and his fellow campers kindly accepted that he had only managed to get four stars, which led to a paltry dinner of squirrels.

While discussing which experiences he’s afraid of, Richard admitted, “I don’t have any particular kind of phobia, but the only thing I’m afraid of – I’m not comfortable with heights.”
