Mercedes has an electric concept version of the G-Wagen

revealed Mercedes has unveiled an electric concept version of its luxury off-road box car G-Wagen, demonstrating that the large SUV has an electric future.

The company said it is testing a production version of this vehicle across the 4,741-foot Schockle Mountain in Graz, Australia, at the end of its development to demonstrate its off-road capabilities.

The company did not reveal many details about the officially named Concept EQG version of the electric SUV during its presentation at the 2021 IAA Mobility exhibition in Munich.

The range ratings, battery size or power for the electric motors were also not mentioned. But four electric motors are used, one near each wheel and they have a low and high gearbox with 22-inch wheels.

Mercedes says a reduction in off-road driving is available through its two-speed convertible gearbox.

The Concept EQG is the first attempt at how Mercedes has modified the new generation G-Class that it first revealed at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show.

The EQG Concept version shows a very likely design for the upcoming electric G-wagen. It has the same square shapes and round headlights as the classic G-wagen.

It also includes new design cues from the brand’s electric vehicles. Including a black front panel that replaces the grille, has an illuminated grommet and an illuminated Mercedes logo.

Protective strips are also lit along the side of the body. The additional rear-mounted frame is also replaced by a lockable box that can hold the charging cable.

The flat roof has an LED light strip along its front edge to mimic an off-road spotlight, while a red taillight helps illuminate the brake lights.

The AMG G63 is currently the top of the G-Class, which has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine with 577 horsepower. The company says it makes high-performance versions of the EQ range. So expect to see the AMG EQG too.

The EQG joins a large number of electric vehicles that can handle rough terrain when it arrives. General Motors has revived the Hummer brand and is making two fully electric versions: an SUV and a pickup truck.

The startup Rivian is about to launch its first pickup truck. With an SUV coming later this year.

Ford is also teasing an all-electric version of the newly revived Bronco SUV.

The G-Class has been a luxury off-road icon for more than 40 years. So it is expected that the future version will include all the features that the company was rolling out in the latest and most expensive cars, such as the EQS sedan.

And if the company can give the EQG the same range and performance as the EQS and EQE sedans on the company’s new electric vehicle platform. The electric G-Wagen might be worth the wait.
