MediaTek overtakes Qualcomm and Apple and becomes the largest processor manufacturer

The smart phone processors and chipset market has a burning competition between more than one company. The Taiwanese company MediaTek has managed to outperform Apple and Qualcomm to become the largest processor manufacturer in terms of market share, for the second quarter of 2021.

The Taiwanese company has released a range of attractive processors in recent months. Including high-performance Dimensity 5G processors for smartphones, as well as Kompanio processors for tablets and Chromebooks.

The latest CounterPoint report revealed that the company controlled 43% of the total smartphone processor market, thanks to the new releases that focus mainly on 5G networks.

It is reported that the company has achieved significant growth compared to the previous year. This is as the company had controlled only 26% of the smart phone processor market in the same quarter of the previous year.

Qualcomm, which develops Snapdragon processors, has only 28% of the market, which is low compared to what MediaTek has achieved. It is noteworthy that the market for phones supporting 5G networks in general has achieved a significant growth estimated at 31%.

MediaTek becomes the largest processor manufacturer

MediaTek managed to maintain production rates and delivery times for smartphone manufacturers, despite being negatively affected by the chipset crisis on the one hand, and supply chain difficulties on the other.

On the other hand, Apple has maintained its share of this market, which constitutes only 14%. As is well known, all of Apple’s production goes to its phones and smart devices in general. In addition, UNSOC came in fourth place with 9% and Samsung in fifth and last place with 7%.

And the competition for smartphone processors did not stop. Rather, MediaTek competes with Qualcomm as well in the manufacture of communication chips and modems, specifically the fifth generation modems. Qualcomm retained its number one position with 55% of this market.

But MediaTek, on the other hand, has managed to increase its share in this market, from only 11% in the second quarter of 2020 to 30% in the second quarter of 2021, which made it a greater threat to Qualcomm.

MediaTek processors have been known for several years to be bad, power consuming and generate a lot of heat, but these problems have been clearly resolved within the flagship Dimensity series and the mid-range Helio G series. However, smartphone manufacturers still rely on the flagship Snapdragon processors in their phones.
