Smartphone screens have improved greatly in recent times. As manufacturers are offering higher resolutions, higher refresh rates, and better screen qualities. LTPO technology, on the other hand, will change a lot of phone screens.
This is because presenting screens with a high refresh rate and high display resolution consumes the battery charge significantly. If the phone is used with the highest available refresh rate and highest resolution available, this may make the battery unsustainable.
LTPO technology comes in smartphone screens to solve all these problems. It allows using the highest refresh rate and highest resolution without consuming battery life. This technology first appeared in the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and again we saw it in the Samsung Galaxy S21 series.

Over time, more companies began to rely on this technology. It is present in the Find X3 Pro phone from Oppo, and in the OnePlus 9 Pro phone. On the other hand, it has not spread enough until the present time.
LTPO is an abbreviation for the long name for this technology, which in Arabic means “low temperature polycrystalline oxide.” In short, this technology depends on changing the refresh rate automatically while using the phone without the need for any physical component responsible for it.

What is LTPO technology?
The entire technology relies on switching from high and low refresh rates automatically without user interaction. Which means that the phone will rely on a very low refresh rate as long as it doesn’t need to be reversed.
Apple has used this technology in its fifth-generation smartwatches, to allow it to seamlessly switch between 1 Hz and 60 Hz.

Smartphone screens need additional components when manufactured to support this technology, meaning they are not fully software. But as mentioned above, it works directly without an intermediary component.
In the absence of additional hardware dependence, the phone is only able to switch between 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rates. Whereas phones with LTPO technology in its full form can switch between all possible rates.

Although Apple did not use this technology until this year only with the iPhone 13 Pro, it has patents for this technology. This prompted Samsung to develop a different technology that works differently as it relies on a “hybrid oxide” within the internal components.
Samsung has already succeeded with the Galaxy S21 versions in providing energy savings of up to 16% with the use of these screens while using the phone at the highest resolution available. Therefore, the Korean giant is considered one of the pioneers in this field. Although Apple developed it first for its watches.
