Instagram is testing a Favorites feature to organize your feed

Instagram is testing a feed optimization solution called Favorites. According to Alessandro Paluzzi, a mobile developer who first published About the new feature across the Twitter platform, Favorites allows you to prioritize the platform’s most important accounts, so that their posts appear at the top of your feed.

And if this feature sounds familiar, it’s because the platform was testing a different favorite feature in 2017, which lets you specify the exact audience for each post.

For example, you can share a photo of your wedding with specific favourites only, rather than sharing the photos with your entire followers.

However, the 2021 version of the Favorites feature is all about giving you more control over your feed by telling the platform which accounts are most important to you.

You can follow a range of different brands and content creators through your account. But you may not necessarily prioritize this content as importantly as your friends and family’s content.

In a June explainer on how to rank the feed and stories, platform president Adam Mosseri said the company is considering a variety of factors.

It first takes into account the recent posts of people you follow. It then takes into account, in order of importance, things like the popularity and format of engagement. How many times have you interacted with the person who posted the content in recent weeks? How many posts have you liked on the platform? Besides your history of interacting with someone, among others.

The platform then makes predictions about how likely you are to spend a few seconds on a post, commenting on it, liking it, saving it or clicking on the account picture.

“The more likely you are to take an action, and the more you rate that action, the higher you’ll see the post,” Mosseri said.

Although you may like many of the posts you see, this may not be the content you are looking for. But you may be sending the platform error signals about what you want to see in your feed.

It is not clear if this favorite feature may become an official feature. Or it may change before it is introduced on a larger scale.

In the meantime, you may see this feature in your account list, right below Close Friends. It is a feature that allows you to control who you want to share your stories with.
