How covid has changed what styles clients are asking for and why

As we teeter on the edge of  a fourth lockdown and revert back to working from home in pyjamas, a beauty insider has revealed his prediction for a rebellion against  the low maintenance, low key look.

Celebrity hairdresser Ricky Walters, 30, whose clients include Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts, football player Gary Neville, Boyzone’s Ronan Keating and Hollywood star Sandra Bullock, told FEMAIL how he predicts a ‘big and bold 2020’ when it comes to hair.

The talented British stylist founded Soho-based SALON64, which attracts the likes of Margot Robbie due to its exclusive private members feel, and said: ‘Lockdown has made my clients want to go bigger and better than ever.

‘After being stuck inside with low maintenance styles for much of the year, they are really ready to go bold – and not go home.

‘Much of the styles are sparked by Netflix hits like Squid Game, which has what inspired what I’ve called the ‘Squid Lid’ – a sleek bob which really frames the face.

‘Glamorous shows like Selling Sunset and Emily in Paris have also paved the way for the comeback of “Hollywood hair” and “French girl hair”‘.

And drama is the theme for 2022, according to Ricky, who added: ‘Maximum volume and maximum curl is making a comeback. Hollywood hair is not just reserved for those on the red carpet. Glam will be back in 2022. The bigger the better.’

Squid Lid

The Squid Lid: Salon 64’s founder and celebrity hairdresser Ricky Walters said: ‘We are seeing a huge rise in trends coming our way from areas in Asia including China and Japan.

He added: '2021 showed a rise in 'Squid Lids' Squid game (pictured) inspired hair and 2022 will be no different with Geisha Hair becoming a trend to watch out for'

‘We are seeing a huge rise in trends coming our way from areas in Asia including China and Japan.

‘With hair to die for, Geisha hair is a poker straight bob that simply hangs elegantly. All one deep brunette in colour and super soft and shiny the hair must be worn blunt and poker straight.

Red Heads

Return of the Redhead: 'Blondes have had their moments and brunettes are always in and out of fashion but 2022 will be the year of the red head'

‘We are not all blessed with incredible jaw dropping strawberry locks but in 2022 that won’t stop us.

‘Redheads will be everywhere you look regardless of hair type or texture.’

Soho Feathering

Soho feathering: 'Evolving from the grown-out fringe, clients of Soho are opting for heavy layers sitting scattered around the face. Even better worn with a fringe for added attitude'

‘It’s been a while since we have all heard the word ‘feathering’. Mainly striking fear in the hearts of hairdressers everywhere but believe it or not a version of feathering is making a huge comeback.

‘Evolving from the grown-out fringe, clients of Soho are opting for heavy layers sitting scattered around the face. Even better worn with a fringe for added attitude. Also ideal for hair-ups and leaving your feathering behind for a little softness.

‘Clients are craving looks with maximum impact and gone are the days of ‘pretty hair’ it’s all about going big hair!’

French girl hair

French girl hair: 'Having been in hibernation and now starting to live our lives again it has given clients plenty of time to research their desired looks as well as a new lust for life'

‘No one has such style as our friends in France and in turn ‘French Girl Hair’ is born.

‘Bobs with heavy grown out fringes along with super undone effortless hair has made this trend a highly requested cut amongst the trendsetters of Soho.’

The Mane

The Mane: 'The bigger the better, both for those with straight or wavy hair! For girls with curls the mane is a round shape designed to show off the most incredible curls.'

‘Where curly bobs were once in fashion, The Mane has taken this ethos one step further.

‘Forget subtle shapes its all about head-turning hair.’

Hollywood Hair

Hollywood hair: 'Max volume and max curl for a glam hair revival. Whether it's called Texas hair or Hollywood hair, it doesn't matter and not just reserved for those on the red carpet.'

‘Clients are slowly stepping away from low-maintenance hair and fast becoming savvy to hair with volume. I predict big blow-dries are back.

Perms and curls

And with Netflix hit Nappily Ever After, a film following a self discovery journey that begins with the lead character embracing her natural hair texture, winning praise among viewers – women are said to be embracing thair natural – and unnatural curls.

According to the stylist, perms are now being used to add movement, volume, texture and drama to otherwise boring hair, and it could be huge for 2022 – both literally and metaphorically speaking.

The low-key salon is hidden on a bustling street in Soho, and features pop up styling tables which can be folded away for exclusive events – with a dazzling fire that pops up between tables at night.

Complete with bar offering cocktails with your appointment and a hidden basement floor – which Margot Robbie hires out during visits – the salon is a haven for VIPs.

Ricky has styled the hair of Hollywood’s finest, including Sandra Bullock, WILL.I.AM and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Ricky’s reputation grew throughout the industry, and he is unstoppable – styling Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts, presenter Laura Whitmore and many more celebrities for red carpet events.

And men flock to him too, with Gary Neville and Ronan Keating among the  A-listers to walk through the door.

He describes SALON64 and CLUB64 as a space for clients to not just have their hair styled but to hang out, socialise and join part of a what we now call the 64 community.

The salon has even launched its own hair care range, with its latest £44.99 ‘Liquid Gold Shampoo’ using real gold extract to aid hair recovery and strengthen hair.
