Barack and Michelle Obama end their podcast partnership with Spotify

Barack and Michelle Obama will NOT renew Spotify podcast deal after clashing with the streaming giant over exclusivity and how often they had to appear in episodes

  • The Obama’s signed a deal in 2019 for an undisclosed figure to stream podcasts made by Higher Ground on Spotify
  • Since then, Barack has appeared in eight episodes of the podcast Renegades: Born in the USA with Bruce Springsteen
  • Michelle has released 10 episodes of The Michelle Obama Podcast
  • The couple do not want their content to be streamed exclusively on Spotify, which they say they feel limits their audience, according to sources
  • They also don’t want to appear in as many episodes or make as many as Spotify’s other top-performing shows
  • Now, they are said to be seeking a deal worth ‘tens of millions’ with Amazon’s Audible or iHeartMedia
  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also signed a $30million deal with Spotify in 2020 but failed to produce any content until the following year

Barack and Michelle Obama will not be renewing their lucrative podcast partnership with Spotify after clashing with the streaming giant over exclusivity and how much they were expected to appear in episodes.

The former first couple are said to be looking instead for a new deal at Amazon with its Audible service, or at iHeartMedia, according to Bloomberg which first revealed that the arrangement was not being renewed.

The Obama’s signed their deal with Spotify in 2019 for an undisclosed sum but it is likely to be in the realm of $30million, the amount scored by Harry and Meghan in 2019 for a multi-year deal.

Since then, Michelle has hosted her own podcast – The Michelle Obama Podcast – and Barack has appeared in a series with Bruce Springsteen titled Renegades: Born in the USA.

Between them, the Obamas have only released 18 podcast episodes in more than two years.

Now, they are now seeking a deal that sources say will be worth ‘tens of millions of dollars’.

Bloomberg’s report says that the couple have clashed repeatedly with Spotify on two issues – giving the giant exclusive rights to their content, produced by Higher Ground, and how much they had to appear in the episodes.

Spotify pays podcast hosts like Joe Rogan and Alexandra Cooper (Call Her Daddy) exorbitant salaries in exchange for having exclusive rights to air their content.

Rogan’s deal is said to be more than $200 million. Cooper meanwhile has a three-year deal worth $60 million, according to Variety.

According to sources familiar with the Obama deal, the couple felt that limited their audience. Instead, they want to be able to sell the content to multiple bidders.

Spotify would eventually gain access to it, the sources said.

Another issue is that Spotify wanted the couple to appear predominantly in all of the episodes, whereas they wanted to use the platform to elevate other, less famous voices.

Bloomberg’s sources also say that the couple weren’t creating as much content as Spotify’s other big act shows, which typically produce one episode a week if not more.

Neither Spotify nor the Obamas has made an offer.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also have a deal with Spotify for content worth a rumored $30million.

The couple failed to produce any content throughout 2021.

The only episode they have released in two years is a 30-minute holiday special at the end of 2020.

Spotify’s highest-paid host is Joe Rogan, who is a thorn in the side of liberal stars and activists who claim he should be taken off air.

Earlier this year, the streaming service sparked fury among woke listeners by saying it would not take Rogan’s show down, despite their demands.
