A different fan said: Michael Massey needs to be sacked immediately. He shouldn’t be in charge of another F1 race again.

And while most people have gripped about a duel between Hamilton and Verstappen this season, one follower described the campaign as a “complete joke”, adding, “Discard Macy’s immediately.”

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff was heard exchanging with Masi in the immediate aftermath of the race, saying: “We need to get back to the lap before.”

Massey’s response to Wolfe was surprising. “It’s called motor racing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hamilton was humble despite the agonizing nature of his defeat. He said: First, congratulations to Max and his team. I think we’ve done a great job this year, my team, everyone back in the factory, all the men and women, we’ve worked really hard all year.

It was the toughest season. I am so proud of them, and so grateful to be on the journey with them. We gave her absolutely everything, we never gave up and that’s the most important thing.

“Of course I’ve been feeling great in the car for the past couple of months, especially at the end.

“But if I’m being honest, we’re still in the pandemic and I just hope everyone stays safe and spends Merry Christmas with their families, and we’ll see that next year.”
