An influential mom criticized for filming a video of dancing alongside a sick child battling a lung infection in hospital

An influential mother is facing a backlash online after she posted a video of her dancing alongside her sick child – who is in the hospital battling a lung infection and can’t breathe on his own.

Whitney Levitt, of Georgia, sparked a firestorm of scrutiny after she showed her moves on TikTok, while her sick son, Liam, lay next to her.

Whitney and her husband, Connor, welcomed Liam (who they often call me) on December 5, and only two weeks later – the newborn was hospitalized due to lack of oxygen.

He then tested positive for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and was diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia one day later.

But his mother, who often posts videos of herself dancing on TikTok and has gained more than 475,000 followers on the app, didn’t let the disturbing news stop her from moving on.

In a viral video – now removed – she explains his diagnosis while transferring her body to the song If You Love Me by Nissa Barrett.

Lil Li was taken due to lack of oxygen. He tested positive for RSV. Waiting for him to breathe better on his own,” she wrote, as she enthusiastically rocked her hips and jumped to the beat.

Several people were quick to respond to TikToker, saying they found the video very tasteless – considering the child’s illness.

One person wrote on Twitter: “When you hope your sick child survives, but then you realize this is going to be as cool as a cool dance routine on TikTok.”

Another added: “It takes a really sick person to resort to the TikTok dance at a moment like this. This poor child.

As a pediatrician nurse I see this behavior a lot. Someone else’s response, it’s sad.

Oftentimes as we start IV’s, drawing labs, and so on, parents are on their phones recording all the trauma their little ones are going through on social media rather than pleasing their lovely kids. Very frustrating.’

After being severely reprimanded, Whitney responded in another video, claiming she only did the dance in an effort to stay “positive.”

What is respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)?

  • RSV is a common and contagious virus that causes respiratory infections
  • It spreads easily through the air – you can become infected if someone with RSV coughs or sneezes near you. The virus is also transmitted to others through direct contact, such as shaking hands
  • Symptoms include nasal congestion or runny nose, dry cough, low-grade fever, sore throat, sneezing, headache, short, shallow and rapid breathing, unusual tiredness, irritability, difficulty breathing, and more
  • It can be more severe in young children, and in some cases, it can cause pneumonia or bronchitis

I understand that people are upset with the video I made. “I just want to be clear and make it clear that I was just trying to be positive,” she said, breaking down in tears.

I think it’s important not to just assume what someone is going through. I removed it because I can see how someone might get the wrong idea.

This was honestly trying to be positive in this situation. I would like to thank the people who have reached out to me and my family, I really appreciate it.

But some people weren’t here to respond, and TikToker received even more scathing comments.

One responded, “When my child was sick in the hospital, the last thing on my mind was Tik Tok and dancing.”

The problem is that not everything has to be shared on social media. I was shocked that people might find this inappropriate? Another user wrote.

A third added: “My daughter has been very ill in the NICU for 5 weeks. I couldn’t imagine smiling and dancing next to my sick child.

A mother of two said on Instagram that she felt “extremely confused” and “helpless” due to her son’s illness.

“It’s honestly so overwhelming. It’s hard not to feel helpless at times like this.” But I am grateful to you guys, friends and family for all the support Connor and I have.

In another post, she added, “I am so angry. … I hate having all these ropes around him, especially while feeding him.

I’m mad because I don’t know how long we have to be in this 140 square foot room.

With all these hateful feelings, I’m still very grateful. I’m grateful that we now know what’s going on and have antibiotics to treat it. Keep your strength, Lil Lee. we love you.’
